Annual General
Meeting - 2018/19
At the 2018 AGM on 16th October, Dr Dr Euan Wielewski retired
as Council Member and Auditor of the Association. We thank Euan
for his contribution to the work of the Association. Mike Arrowsmith
retired as Investments Manager after having looked after the Association’s
finances since the
formation of SAM in 1974 (and previously holding the post of Treasurer
of the Institute of Metals Scottish branch). John
Darling agreed to take over the management of the accounts and
investment portfolio.
150th Celebrations London ISI: John Wilcox reported that
the Iron and Steel Board (ISB) of IOM3 had asked for the support
SAM in celebrating the 150th anniversary of the formation of the
London Iron and Steel Institute. Discussion on how the association
can support this are ongoing.
The meeting also included short presentations from the various
Formula student teams supported by SAM.
USM
The University of Strathclyde
Motorsport Team (USM) is Strathclyde's team to compete in the
Formula Student international design competition, the world’s
top student engineering competition. Every year, a team of around
30 students from across the universities engineering, business
and Physics faculties design, manufacture and then race at competition
a single seater formula style race car at various competitions
in Europe.
USM is the oldest and
most successful Formula Student team in Scotland having won the
Cost and Manufacturing Event a total of 4 times, twice at Formula
Student UK in Silverstone and twice at Formula Student Germany
in the Hockenheimring. Our highest ever competition finish was
in the 2015 Season with a 12th Place overall at the Formula Student
Germany Competition, arguably the most prestigious Formula Student
event.
Founded in 1999 by
a small team of students from the University’s Mechanical
& Aerospace Engineering department this team has rapidly grown
from its humble roots to the model team forming the basis of most
other Scottish Formula Student teams.
UGRacing
UGRacing smashed team
records at Formula Student 2018, finishing 11th overall out of
over 80 competing Universities. The record performance saw UGR
finish 6th out of the UK teams, as well as overall Scottish champions
for the first time ever! The team performed particularly well
in the Business Event, placing 2nd overall, as well as in Efficiency
and Endurance, placing 12th and 15th overall.
The design of UGR-19 seeks to maintain the drivability, low cost
and reliability of UGR-18, whilst making significant increases
to vehicle performance. The most notable of these changes will
be the reduction from 13” wheels to 10” wheels, accompanied
by smaller hubs, uprights and brake disks, consequently resulting
in a reduced vehicle mass. UGR-19 will also feature the team’s
first aerodynamic device: a diffuser mounted under the car to
create downforce, thus improving the car’s cornering performance.
EUFS
Comprising of students
from various cultural and academic backgrounds, Edinburgh University
Formula Student comes together each year to construct an open-wheel
race car from scratch. After the design and assembly process,
the team participates in prestigious international competitions
with other universities from around the world. The team was established
in 2014 and now has over 50 members across a variety of sub-teams,
from Chassis, Suspension, and Engine to Electronics, Autonomous,
and Business. The society teaches members to apply what they have
been taught at university to a real-life engineering project.
With the rise of autonomous cars into the mainstream in recent
years, the AI branch of the team was founded which seeks to give
students an opportunity to get into the exciting field of driverless
cars. Incredibly, the team managed to create an autonomous software
package and won 1st place in the DDT class in the first ever Formula
Student UK Driverless event! This year, the team plans to develop
their first electric car. With the help of The Scottish Association
for Metals, the team will retrofit their 2017 car with an electric
drivetrain and integrate the sensors required to develop a full
autonomous race car.
Annual General
Meeting - 2016
At the 2016 AGM on 1st November, Dr Bill Barr retired as Council
Member and Auditor of the Association after 17 years service.
We thank Bill for his significant contribution to the work of
the Association and wish him a happy and healthy retirement. Dr
Euan Wielewski agreed to take over Bill's role as an Auditor.

Robert
Perrin Award
Awarded to
Colin Hindle.
Colin has been heavily
involved in schools outreach work which, significantly, involves
local businesses. His chairmanship of the Scottish Plastics and
Rubber Association's Education committee allows him a platform
to access funding for outreach activities. An example of his success
is the, now annual, Fantastic Plastic Tour held across two venues,
Edinburgh and Glasgow. This year 1400 secondary pupils attended
and since its inception in 2009 the attendees total nearly 8000.
He has also shared his experience through his membership of the
Horners' Company Polymer Committee and plans are now being developed
to run similar events in London and Manchester. He has been the
leader of "Polymer Study Tours" at Napier for over 25
years and was responsible for the whole programme for many years
which included sharing best practice with other Universities and
acting as a mentor. Thus, he has helped hundreds of teachers to
improve their understanding of the polymer industry and positively
influenced many thousands of pupils. He remains a key member of
the PST steering committee.
Colin actively engages
with the science faculties of Teacher Training establishments
and is in general very energetic in promoting STEM subjects. In
summary, I believe that Colin Hindle would be a very worthy recipient
of the Bob Perrin Award for his extraordinary achievement in broadening
the knowledge of many disparate groups of polymer science and
his sustained commitment to outreach activities which started
long before such initiatives were part the of the remit of Universities.
Local Society
of the Year Award (small)
Awarded to
Mining Institute of Scotland (MIS). MIS saw a 30% rise
in memebrship in 2015 and maintained attendance levels at meeting,
partly due to the numerous students seminars held at Universities,
including The University of St Andrews and Aberdeen's Robert Gordon
University. MIS run a full programme of technical meetings covering
a diverse range of subjects, including oil and gas, mining, geology
and environment.
At Fife College they
helped establish a Student Forum, in line with IOM3 objective
of engaging potential technicians. Students were hosted at the
International Coiled Tubing and Well conference in Aberdeen. An
article was specifically written to coincide with the 70th anniversary
of the Monopol Grimberg disaster to raise awareness of the role
that past memebrs of the Mining Institite of Scotland played in
both helping address the incident and the reconstruction of the
German coal mining industry after World War II. A history of the
local society, Hidden Riches, was published.
Supporting
Science at School.
In 2015, the Association provided grant support to a Kilmarnock
Engineering and Science Society (KESS) project to promote
an interest in science at Bellsbabnk Primary School, Ayrshire.
The funding was used to allow the pupils to visit the Scottish
Industrial Railway Centre at Dunaskin. During the visit, the pupils
were given a tour of the locomotive fitting shed where all the
restoration work is carried out and had a short lesson in the
Museum Room. They saw the remains of the iron works and were given
a trip on a brake van pulled by a restored industrial steam locomotive
along the same route which carried the coal to the iron works
all those years ago. Finally the pupils were then taken in pairs
onto the footplate of the locomotive and received an explanation
of the engine, boiler and controls. The pupils and staff had a
wonderful and informative afternoon and were left with a deep
appreciation of the industrial environment in which their ancestors
were employed and brought up.
